Overview
What is the DemoDVD Project? It's a group of people working on a common product: A DVD (video, not DVD-ROM data) of various demos from various scenes. (We're
talking about underground demoscene demos, not product or game demos). We've already produced the first volume entitled
MindCandy Volume 1: PC Demos, and this website is dedicated to informing the world about our efforts for the next
and future volumes.
An obvious question after reading the above would be, "Why on earth would anyone want to do that when you can just run the demos themselves?" Good question:
- You can't always just run the demo. For the thousands of demos written before 2000, the hardware they were written for is hard to find, and modern hardware doesn't play them properly (or at all). In the case of older, discontinued platforms like Amiga, Commodore 64, and Atari ST, the hardware is scarce and it takes great effort to get them running.
- A DVD of the video allows people with DVD players to play the videos on their television for some acid-trippy/nostalgic/appreciative/eye-candy fun.
- Popping a DVD of the video into a DVD player is a very quick way to show non-scener friends what demos are like (or newer sceners what older demos were like) without all the hassle of finding the demo and the proper hardware to run it.
- For die-hard sceners who complain that emulators aren't good enough, a DVD gives an exact historical account of just how the demo looked and sounded.
